Facts about Laughter

Did you know that laughter has been proved to be contagious by research carried out in Sweden?

It is thought that the modern day “ha-ha” could have evolved as a form of communication. Our primate ancestors used a similar sound to reassure one another that their rough and tumble play, was only playing and not a form of attack.

Most laughter is not about humour; it’s about relationships between people. We are 30 times more likely to laugh in a social situation than we are alone.

It’s estimated that an adult laughs between 15 to 20 times a day. 10 to 15 minutes of daily laughing can burn 10 to 40 calories.

The study of laughter is known as, ‘gelotology’.

Laughing is a great workout for our faces because when we laugh we move 12 facial muscles. However, when we talk and laugh at the same time, we move 84!!

In groups, women laugh more than men. Women also laugh more at men than men laugh at women. Hmm….. We’ll leave it there shall we!

Why Laughter is good for you

Like most people, I love a laugh.

To me, it’s a simple pleasure in life. There’s nothing better than laughing with others. I love the spontaneity; when I’m not expecting to find something funny but I did!

There’s nothing better than crying because I’ve been laughing so much.

I’m grateful to everyone who has made me or continues to make me laugh.

What makes you laugh? Or better still, do you have any jokes to share? Let me know in the comments, below.

  1. Absolutely, laughter is the best medicine and has a lot of health benefits! I didn’t know that it was used by our ancestors as a form of language, that makes sense how they used it to reassure one another that it’s all fun and games essentially.
